Venturi

immersiVe ENhancemenT of User-woRld Interactions

The goal of VENTURI is the development of a next generation mobile platform equipped with advanced sensors and cameras, highly powerful from an IT standpoint, tailored specifically towards the demands posed by Augmented Reality.

To improve the precision of device location systems, traditionally based on GPS, VENTURI will develop and utilise more advanced visual localisation techniques based on 3D scene analysis to exactly understand the pose of the user’s device with respect to the surroundings and the user themselves. Such unprecedented estimates of location accuracy combined with context sensitivity will enable the user to receive information solidly embedded into the scene, that is always pertinent to their surroundings and current activity; for example, are they running in the rain, or sitting on the beach. In addition, the platform, using gyroscopes and accelerometers could also permit the user to interact with their device through natural gestures instead of typing on a screen, thus freeing the user from form-factor restrictions.

VENTURI expects to create a new content delivery paradigm through Augmented Reality that focuses more on the user rather than on the device

C2M, Multimedia Cooperative Publishing Chain

The project aims at integrating XML publishing chains, Enterprise Content Management (ECM), and multimedia creation tools, in order to design a complete digital system for multimedia creation, management and publishing.

The main challenge lies in the convergence of several approaches:

Convergence is made possible by the maturity of XML technologies and by the collaborative practices popularized by the web.

In this project, WAM focuses on multimedia creation tools. Our work on HTML timing using SMIL Timesheets is part of this project.

 

Autonomy High-tech to serve people with disabilities

The goal of the project is to develop high-tech tools to improve autonomy for people with disabilities. These tools are integrated in mobile devices such as cell phones or special-purpose devices, to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities. These devices access remote dedicated services to help geolocation and guiding. They take advantage of the latest advances in embedded systems: cameras, audio, video, compass, accelerometer, gyroscope. Two major application areas are addressed: software tools on cell phones for sight disabled people, and guiding and information tools for moving around in a city.

Grenoble Augmented City, Large scale experimentation of augmented reality technologies

This project uses XML formats for multimedia content (HTML5), interactive audio (A2ML), and points of interest (W3C POI) in complex mixed reality applications. WAM develops a Mixed Reality browser that runs on the iPhone and the iPad. The first application of this browser is a cultural heritage visit of Grenoble that can be played on site in Augmented Reality or remotely in Augmented Virtuality.
